Library collection overview:
Nankai University library contains numerous collections from a variety of fields in order to meet academic and research needs. Generally, these collections held in four libraries cover several different disciplines, including literature, science, medical, management, social science, and etc.
The collection is strong in all aspects of economics, history, chemistry and mathematics. Especially, the Nankai Institute of Economics houses lots of economical documents which are very precious in home and abroad still. The mathematical holdings, particularly with regard to quantities and varieties, are also extensive. The Series Lecture Notes in Mathematics (vol 1-1547) has been collected completely by the library, which offer much convenience for the readers in this field.

I know that most of the departments have the reference from, would you like to introduce that the difference about the collection features between the library and the department reference room?
Well, the main purpose of the department reference room is to provide the academic resources related to the specific disciplines, so their acquisition will focus on the academic newspaper and periodicals directed to their disciplines; while the mission of our Nankai University Library lies in giving support to academic research of all disciplines of the university, so the acquisition scope will be much abroad then the department reference room. And the acquisition of foreign periodicals will be managed centralized by the NKUL, then the NKUL will distributed the periodicals to the department reference room .
To follow with the resource sharing principle, the department reference room will open to all the readers of the Nankai University.

What are the two methods for western book classification?
Year 1975 is a threshold of the Chinese Library Classification(CLC) and Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC). «Chinese Library Classification(CLC)» is published in 1975, and applied to all the books published after 1975.
Donations of the western books that arrived at NKUL after 1990 are classified as below:
Books published before 1945 are applied with Decimal Classification(DDC);
Books published after 1945 are applied with Chinese Library Classification(CLC)

What kinds of the classification methods are applied to the Chinese periodicals, Chinese old Serial number periodicals, western periodicals ,Japanese periodicals, and Russian periodicals separately?
Chinese Library Classification(CLC) is applied to the Chinese periodicals;
Liu Guojun Classification method is applied to the Chinese old Serial number periodicals and Japanese periodicals
Dewey Decimal Classification(DDC) is applied for the western periodicals and the Russian periodicals

How to search for books via the “Public Online catalogue search system? ”
The Public Online catalogue search system of Nankai university library covers the collections(include the Chinese books and western books published after 1975) of the libraries and the college studying material centers.
You may find the needed resources by this track:

How to search for periodicals via the “Public Online catalogue search system”?
Type the title of the periodical in the search box, then choose the keyword as “title”.

Can we find the materials written in languages other than English (such as: French, Germany, Spanish, etc.)? what kind of notes that we should know before starting a searching process?
Yes. Documents in different kinds of languages are also available for the readers.
Please pay attention to avoid the letter that has a pronunciation sign when you input the retrieval terms, otherwise you will not get the correct retrieval result.

I need some Russian books, so may I search those documents in the online catalogue system ? If not, could you tell me how to search for a Russian book?
Until now, the Russian books have not been catalogued by computer, while, we may do this work in the future. So , now you may use the card catalogue to search the Russian books .

How many retrieval items may I use to search for the books via the online catalogue system-?
Well, you may search the documents by item “Phrase, author, title, subject, series, periodical title”.

Which part of collections can only be found by the card catalogue?
The cataloging of the card catalog was ceased in January 2000. The collections of Chinese books and western books can be searched via the on line catalog. For the collecting information of Russian and Japanese documents had not been computerized, so you may need the card catalogue still when you need those kind of materials.

What is the initial account number for the user?
The account number is your library card number, password is produced automatically by the system. You can check your password from the circulation desk if you forget it.

Loan service for books and periodicals

Where can I find social science books?
The Liberal Arts library holds the mainly collections of social science. Specially, room 201 is the loan desk and will provide circulation service for social sciences books in Chinese and Western languages. And various kinds of reading rooms will also provide reading and reference service according to their different functions. Among them, room 402 is the Students Reference reading room, room 502 is the reading room of Social sciences reference books and room 501 is the Reserved Copies Stack Room.

And how can I find the natural science books?
The Natural Science Library provides the related service about the natural science documents. You may borrow natural science books in room 201, and room 402 and room 201are Chinese Periodicals Reading room and Western Periodicals reading room separately.

How can I search the textbook of foreign universities?
“The Central Library of Foreign textbook” of Nankai university library (NKUL) was authorized by Educational Department. Locating in room 205 of the natural science library, it mainly houses the current foreign textbooks of physical disciplines from some famous universities.

I am majored in economics, which part of NKUL will provide the related documents?
NKUL established an Economical branch library in order to meet the readers’ need in economical discipline. The main collections of this branch library covers such economical majors as economical science, risk management, finance and insurance, etc. Readers may find the needed documents whose CLC ( Chinese Library Classification ) number is F or C93. The loan desk in the second and third floor will in charge of the circulation service of Chinese and Western documents.

I want to borrow the Chinese reserved copy of Economical branch library, how can I manage it?
All the readers who have the valid reader’s card approved by NKUL has the privilege to read the reserved copies in the stack room. And the graduate students and faculty of NKUL can borrow those 2 reserved copies without renewal, and the loan period is 15 days.

Which part of NKUL hold the books donated by World Bank?
You may read them in the stack room of western books of the Economical Branch library.

Is NKUL has the reading room for reference books?
Room 302 in liberal arts library is reference books reading room, with its collections covers various kinds of reference books in different languages, for example: Encyclopedia, Yearbook, Handbook, Name directory, Organization directory, Dictionary and Genus-book, etc. Other reading rooms also holds some kinds of reference books of key disciplines.

I want to read some publications of my teachers, so does Nankai university library has the related reading room for this purpose?
Room 404 is that kind of reading room collecting the publications and works of the faculty, the alumina in home and abroad, and the foreign teachers as well.

At which reading room may I find the rare book and thread-bound book?
You may find many precious rare books in Room 306 of the liberal arts library, the rare book reading room. The reading room will provide the rare book catalogue for users. You may research the book by the classified catalogue and title catalogue according to your own needs.
And room 506-508 is the thread-bound book reading room.

Does Nankai university library house the periodicals published before liberation?
Room 306 of the liberal arts library holds the periodicals and newspaper published before liberation, and even some earlier Nankai publications. While, most of the western periodicals are collected in room 302 of the natural science library, readers may read according to their needs.

Does the library allow the readers borrow the same book concurrently as he just returned it at the circulation desk?
To ensure the equal right of all readers, our library makes the instructions that the returned book can only be borrowed again after the librarians put it on the shelf, while the library also requires this process of putting on shelf should be done within 24 hours in order to the readers could pick up the needed books as soon as possible. .

At which part of library can I read the Chinese and Western periodicals? Can I search them on-line?
Room 202 and 302 in the natural science library are periodical reading room, readers may assess to the periodicals by searching the periodicals catalogue (paper-based). And our website also offer the electronic version of this catalogue.

I want to the opening hour of our library?
Generally, the opening hours of Nankai University added up to 144 hours every week, as for the specific opening hours of different reading room, you may be informed on the website.

Which section of the library will provide the Chinese periodical published from 1857?
«National newspaper and Magazines Index database»has the characteristics of large quantity ( almost 800 million until now), complete variety of disciplines, and long period of backtrack time (date from 1857), so you may find the needed materials with the help of this database.

How can I get access to the bibliography of the key Chinese and Western periodicals?
We offer Chinese bibliography in room 202 and 204 of the natural science library, you may also get the related information by the Periodicals navigation system on the library website.

Does the library frame the instructions for loaning the foreign reserved books?
?Our library policy recommend that the graduate students and faculties may borrow 2 foreign reserved books each time, and the loan period is 15 days without renewal.

Reference Service

Interlibrary loan service among Tianjin regional Universities
Presently, 20 University libraries of Tianjin have agreed “The Supplement of the Management of Interlibrary Loan Service among Tianjin Regional Universities”. According to this supplement, besides the current interlibrary loan service, each university library will provide 10 ILL cards for the other 19 libraries respectively and the service will be managed via the Unicorn System.
Steps for accessing this service:
Firstly, users need to get an ILL card of the lending library provided by the library which the user belongs to, then take the ILL card along with the user’s library card to the lending library to borrow materials directly. After returning the borrowed materials to the lending library, the user must return the ILL card to the user’s own library.
The types of materials that can be borrowed include Chinese language books and foreign language books.
Users may have the ILL card for 33 days and 31 days for the loaned books.

If I met difficulties in using the library, where can I get help?
Well, we offer help for the users by different approaches. You may go to the enquiry room in 204 of the Main Library (the liberal arts library) and there are also enquiry desks in every reading room and reference room. Now we also have online information desk on the home page of the library. There will be experienced librarians to answer your questions and offer help.

If I have some opinions or suggestions about the service of the library, how can I reflect it to the library?
Every readers may make comments or give us suggestions through email at the “information desk” of the home page. You can also contact with our library liaisons or write down your comments on the library opinion book. We will give you a reply as soon as possible.

How to get access to the library BBS?
First, enter BBS of the Nankai University, then find “discussion classification”-Nankai University-NKU Departments-Library.

Electronic reading room

How to become a user of the electronic reading room?
Anyone who is an eligible member of the University can become a user member of the electronic reading room (include teachers, students, and any reader who carries a library card valid in both Nankai university and Tianjin university ).To become a member, please bring your library card to the Accounting office to pay a deposit.

What is the functional difference between the computers in the electronic reading room and the ones in the library hall?
The computers in the library hall will provide such free services as: searching the public on- line catalogue, checking the user’s account, dealing with book renewal, etc.
While, the computers in the electronic reading room will offer the following services as: besides the functions listed above, we can also provide on line service, uses can search and get access to the needed information resources from the library databases or by internet. Users will be charged by using the computers in the electronic reading room

Electronic Resources Services

Does the library have facilities of accessing internet?
Yes. In NKU libraries, there are 284 networked computers for library users to access library electronic resources and to navigate the internet. These computers are located in the following areas:
•Room 202 in main library contains 144 networked computers.
•Economical branch library are equipped with 48 networked computers.
•Branch library on Ying Shui Dao Campus equipped with 62 networked computers.
All the facilities in the above areas are available for the campus users ( NKU faculty, students and staffs).
•Room 404 in Main Library provides 48 networked computers which are specially oriented to the off campus users.

If the documents I need are not available in our library, what could I do?
For the documents that are not available in our library, you can contact with the Information Reference Department online(????????). Our librarian will help you to search and find the documents you need from Peking University or Tsinghua University based on the protocol we made.

If I encounter some difficulties in database using, how can I do?
When you encounter any problem in using databases on website, please try the following methods:

If I am a reader off Nankai University campus, so how can I use the databases in provided by the library?
Public users can contact with our Information Reference Department(Room 504, Floor 5), which will provide a kind of paid retrieval service for the uses inside or off the campus directly. For some organizations or institutes, which want to utilize our electronic resources for a long time , we recommend that they may settle accounts or establish the cooperation relation with our library periodically. We may help you to access to the needed information from our E-resources or through interlibrary-loan service.

Would you introduce us some self-developed databases of Nankai university library?
We are developing many distinctive databases based on our collections, which includes “CALIS Database of Transnational Corporations (TNCs) Studies”, “ CALIS Teaching Reference Books Database” , “Teaching Materials Full-Text Database”, “CDs For Library Collections”, “Thesis & Dissertation Database of Master’s Degree & Ph D of Nankai University (Abstract)”.

I want to know more about the “Thesis & Dissertation Database of Master’s Degree & Ph D of Nankai University (Abstract)”, for example, from which year does the data collection process begin?
The thesis and dissertation of the graduate students of Nankai Univ have been collected gradually in the database since 2004. You can go to the bibliographical description of the database ( abstract and full-text ) from year 2004 to present to find the needed dissertations. According to the copyright protection principle, we can only provide the dissertation in full text one year later or based on the author’s requirement. While, for the dissertation completed before 2003, we can only provide the bibliographical description and abstracts for you.

I have noticed that you have established a E-journal navigation system on your website, would you tell more about this system ?
In order to provide more convenience for readers in using E-databases, our library established this navigation system which all the electronic foreign databases are classified according to 19 subjects. With the help of this navigation system, readers will find the related database as soon as possible.

I am not proficient in using the resources of the library, so What kind of trainings may I get from the library?
We offer many lectures and trainings on the information of computer application, database using, searching skills and so on. We also provide trainings on how to use traditional searching tools to find the documents you need.

How can I know the specific news of training or organized by the library?
If you want to receive the training or lecture held in NKL, you can get the news from our website or see the notice pasted in front of our lobby in one week before the lecture or training.

What is the qualification statement for the doctoral students?
Doctoral students in science and technology must fill in “Research Works Qualification Statement Form For Nankai University Doctoral Degree Applicants” in room 504 of Liberal Arts Library before their graduations. Our librarians will search whether their research works are published in the source materials of EI or SCI and will provide an identification statement according to the search result.
